About Us

Downs Farms – Cultivating Gourmet Mushrooms with Passion and Precision.

Our mushrooming venture is a reflection of our belief in the burgeoning farm-to-table movement and the undeniable health benefits it brings to our community.

Our journey began as an unexpected twist in our life’s path, driven by a desire to make the most of our farmland. As it turns out, we don’t even need much room to grow and harvest mushrooms! Today, we stand as proud pioneers in mushroom farming, nurturing nature’s treasures as the heart of Downs Farms.

A Chance Discovery

Our story unfolds with a serendipitous moment when our niece Peyton Downs, with her agricultural background, was visiting us. Seeking her insights on how to utilize our land effectively, she proposed a novel idea – a mushroom farm!

This proposition sparked our curiosity, setting us on a journey of discovery and transformation.

Revolutionizing Mushroom Farming

Our research led us to a company that upcycles used refrigerator shipping containers into state-of-the-art mushroom cultivation units. These containers are divided into three distinct chambers. Within these controlled environments, we precisely manage humidity, lighting, and fresh air exchange, eliminating the need for additional chemicals in the cultivation process.

This approach empowers us to produce mushrooms year-round with consistency and excellence.

Our Mushroom Varieties

Currently, we specialize in Blue Oyster and Lion's Mane mushrooms. We produce up to 200 pounds per week. To put it in perspective, the typical container of mushrooms at a grocery store weighs just four to six ounces.

Dream Retirement

Mark’s profession has been in construction remodeling, and Julie is an office manager for an orthodontist. Together, we envision Downs Farms as our way to continue ‘working’ in retirement.

Join Our Journey

We’re excited to share our passion for gourmet mushrooms with our city and beyond. While our primary focus is supplying restaurants, we also make our mushrooms accessible to individual sales. Find us at the Farmers Market in Westfield and Broad Ripple.

Christina Alexander
Since childhood, I couldn't stand the smell or taste of mushrooms. But an herbalist friend told me about the benefits of Lions Mane mushrooms so I thought I'd try them. I bought a pound of your Lions Mane mushrooms through Market Wagon and made soup. A few hours after eating the soup, I felt the benefits. Any depression I had was cleared, my circulation felt improved, and my foggy brain felt like it was 12 years old again. I felt energetic and curious the rest of the day rather than fatigued.

The next day, I stopped craving sweets. I realized depression leads to cravings. I am excited about this and want to share this with my friends who could benefit.
